About 360° Assessments

A 360° or multi-rater assessment as it's sometimes referred to, is a process that facilitates gathering information and feedback for an individual, team or organization on its performance by the employees, colleagues and customers who interact with that individual, team or organization.

Soliciting performance feedback from a variety of stakeholders who serve or are served by a particular individual, team or organization is a way of assessing how we are viewed and perceived from a number of different perspectives.

When we receive performance feedback from only one source that feedback is limited in its scope – after all it's not like we behave differently with our co-workers than our boss right?

Therefore the best approach to a 360° assessment is to solicit performance feedback from your boss(s), self, peers, direct reports and customers if it applies so that you get a sense of the whole picture from above, beside, outside and below – hence the term 360°.

In terms of the feedback that you receive there is a variety and that means that there is a format to suit everyone. This includes a scoring spread that establishes how consistent or not you are in the demonstration of a particular behaviour or competency. Graphs are used that illustrate how each of the reporting groups sees you and lastly verbatim written comments that relate to specific observable behaviours that respondents have experienced.
